DACA In The Courts Update: August 17, 2018.

Top 5 Things You Need To Know:

1. The Trump Administration’s goal is to end protections. Their goal is to speed up the courts & use us as bargaining chips for his border wall and more agents. ​This administration killed DACA on September 5, 2017, and has said that their ultimate goal is to deport undocumented people. Trump has tried to use us in the past to get more money for deportation agents. Recently, he publicly said that he wants to shut down the government if he doesn’t get money for his wall and he continues to defend ICE and CBP deportation agents every chance he gets. Their goal is to speed up the court cases so he can get the Supreme court to agree to end DACA.
2. Trump and Republicans in Texas were using the courts for their political gain and to end any chance of new applications and the renewals process for good. ​Texas, the government, and Republican lawyers complained to Texas Judge Hanen that new DACAs made their jobs impossible and that’s why they should end the whole program and declare it unlawful. Hanen could rule any day now, and we can expect a bad decision that attacks DACA. Yesterday, the people fighting for DACA in the DC court case said that for the moment they agreed to accept the part of Judge Bates decision that talked about renewals and holding off on the part that talked about new DACAs for now. What happened in the DC courts yesterday allowed for the movement lawyers in Texas to basically say to judge Hanen that the thing that Republicans were complaining about is no longer relevant to the case should end.
3. Right now, three federal courts agree: Trump’s decision to end DACA was wrong. The DC, California and New York courts have all ordered USCIS to continue accepting DACA renewals. That will be the law of the land for now. The only way DACA can end is if the Supreme Court of the United States says so.
